Maid Mother Crone

Jane Gibson

Symbols of purity, fertility and culmination, the maid, the mother and the crone reflect the cycles of time and nature tied to the very bodies of women.  Celebrating and making visible key stages of female experience, they own the space around them in a world which seeks to objectify, control and suppress them.

Biography

Jane Gibson is a Leeds-based paper and fibre artist whose practice explores the experience of time, of process, and of the cycles of women’s lives.  She uses alternative, traditionally feminine, drawing and crafting techniques including embroidery, crochet, felt making and photomontage to create textured and tactile surfaces.  This drawing practice allows the artist to explore the body and its place in time through action, embedding it into the work itself, each stitch connecting medium, maker and moment.

Jane is also a member of The Art Doctors and The Diva Collective.

The tiny size of the matchboxes allows her the freedom to create spontaneously and rapidly to achieve her ideas with immediacy. Unlike building monumental sculptures that require advance technical planning and specific building materials, the element of playfulness on this scale is limitless. Self-contained within individual rectangular structures, Kathy uses the matchboxes as mini stages on which to create theatrical stage sets and alternative-realities. The stage-like aspect incorporated in much of my work is largely inspired by the studio portraiture of the famous Peruvian photographer, Martin Chambi. (1891 – 1973) The shallow space he captures between his human subjects shot against backdrop landscapes always provokes my interest in the spatial relationship between figures co-existing between

New Haus Gallery

About: Frustrated during lock down at being unable to show physical works in a gallery, New Haus Gallery was created. Initially to create test pieces of works that could explore concepts and possibilities to be scaled up and to show case large pieces by making micro versions of the work to see how they could be curated and exhibited. After taking photos of the gallery and the work the reaction was so positive that we created open calls for artists to be part of the space. This generated a lively debate and a huge response to be part of the gallery.
