Issue 34 - Love, loss & Indifference - writers

For the February issue, we are tackling love, loss, and indifference.

It's the month of hearts and flowers, or not? this is where you decide...

In the words of ABC "All I'm saying is it takes a lot to love you" (Look of Love, 1982) and we want to scratch the surface and look at the darker side of love. There is an old saying, "Those who love less hold the power". Is it about control, power, or being driven by lust?

Our writer’s pages are not just for work on our theme, but also for any other critique, artist info, poem, or prose.

Honey, Have you Got the Kids

Abstract

A sad story is written in prose about the loss of loved ones.

Honey, Have you Got the Kids

There were 5 children

3 older boys and 2 younger girls

Marla and Irene

Jack, Jacob and John

Mary and Jason were very proud

They were good parents

Firm on safety

Indulgent in fun

Fans of reading and classical music no matter the volume of the children

 Theirs was a happy home

 That’s how it was remembered

 Until

 One day

 Tragedy

 Their fight did leave

 So sad to see

They say no parent should have to see witness the death

 It was a true accident

But that was no comfort

The driver felt terrible

But that was no comfort

Death was instant

But that was no comfort

At the start, they just carried on

Like nothing had changed

 Jason went to work

Mary went to work

They both went to church on sundays

 Soon,

Both began to spend more and more time at work

Reading was the first thing to go

  They were too busy

They worked hard to stay busy

Organised the loft

Scrubbed the fridge

Swept the garage

But the couldn’t touch the rooms

Those 5 rooms

The doors stayed closed

The joy was gone from that home

Replaced by the unbearable weight of unspeakable grief

Time passed until there was nothing left to tidy

No floor left unswept

No dish left unpolished

 Silence settled in

 It was Jason first

 Breaking the silence

Bolt upright in bed with cold sweat and hot tears

Repeating and repeating

“Honey, have you got the kids?

“Honey, have you got the kids?”

 He left the next day

 Gone to seek answers

 Mary soon left as well

 The house still stands

With 5 unopened doors

Locked away pockets of a happy time

Echoing with the phrase

“Honey, have you got the kids?”

The First Act of Language was Magic

Abstract

The First Act of Language was Magic is a poem that explores the moment sound was first used to try and communicate complex emotion. It imagines this act as magic. This conception of magic is a philosophical idea, where magic is a term used to connote the spontaneous abstraction of our concrete universe, or our emotional interior, into expression. This abstraction, this magic, is then an artistic utterance. The poem suggests the first attempt may have been to express love and that in succeeding sound became art.
